Stormcloud Brewing Company and The Garden Theater, neighboring businesses in downtown Frankfort, are pleased to announce the inaugural Dark & Stormcloudy Film Series celebrating the best of dark comedies paired with a hand crafted dark beer brewed specially for the movie selection. The series commences on Thursday, Feb. 20 and runs for five weeks ending on March 20 with a weekly tapping of the new beer at 4 p.m. the day of the program.
The League of Women Voters Leelanau County (LWVLC) Energy Committee will host a public forum on “Community Energy Resilience: How do we achieve it?” Tuesday evening February 25 from 6-9 p.m. in the Leelanau County Government Center. The League’s goal is to create community conversations related to saving energy, generating electricity, and learning how “less can be more”, all related to building resilience in the face of energy issues that are and will continue to impact our community.

The Bay Film Series presents “The Rocket” February 9-11 at The Bay Theatre in downtown Suttons Bay. This award-winning film from Laos/Thailand features 10-year-old Ahlo who is targeted by his grandmother to be a symbol of bad luck to his family and village. After disaster strikes his family he struggles to hold the trust of his father as they are forced off their land. Ahlo leads a misfit band of relatives and friends on a journey across a beautiful landscape once ravaged by war as he seeks to prove his goodness and find his family’s respect.
The Chiapas Water Project (CWP) Committee of On The Ground welcomes your presence at a reunion for supporters on Saturday, March 1 at the Old Art Building in Leland from 6-10 p.m. The evening will feature food and drink from local chefs along with a live and silent auction of treasures from regional artists and businesses, as well as artisan goods of Chiapas. Dancing and live music by Tim Sparling and friends will start at 8:30 p.m. There will also be a discussion of successes and challenges of water projects by current staff and board who returned from Chiapas in January.
The Empire Area Emergency Fund will hold the next of its monthly concerts on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 4-6 p.m. at Art’s Tavern in Glen Arbor. The Awesome Uncle “Z” Band will perform a free live concert. Organizers will pass the bucket to collect free will donations to support the efforts of the Emergency Fund.
The League of Women Voters Leelanau County (LWVLC) Farm Labor Task Force will host a panel program on “The Agricultural Migrant Worker in Leelanau County: Issues and Challenges, 2013-14” on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at noon in the lower level meeting room of the Leelanau County Government Center.
The Leelanau County Snowshoe Stampede will tromp through the snow for a second time on Saturday, Feb. 15. The grounds for the stampede are at the Leelanau Outdoor Center on Port Oneida Rd, 4 miles north of Glen Arbor. Adults can stretch out their winter blues on the 5K trail while kids 12 and under take on the 1-mile Snowflake Race. It all starts at 10:30 a.m.
