Glen Arbor Art Association holds 2017 Manitou Music Festival poster competition

The Glen Arbor Art Association invites artists to submit original paintings for the annual Manitou Music Festival poster competition. Deadline for the 2017 poster competition is October 1. The limited edition posters are hugely popular and sold through the art association and selected shops and art galleries. Competition is open to anyone who is a current member of the Glen Arbor Art Association. Subject matter must be appropriate to the Manitou Music Festival. That is, work that represents recognizable area scenes. All artwork must be original and previously unpublished. There is no entry fee. Eighth annual Plein Air weekend supports the arts

On Saturday evening, Aug. 6, artists gathered for a thank-you dinner given by the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) before the Plein Air Paint Out Wet Painting Sale Reception. Art lovers began to arrive at 5 p.m. to line-up to view the art work that culminated the weekend’s events. The GAAA was filled with over 300 art patrons and artists enjoying a lovely evening.

Authentic M-22 sign auctioned live at Library Preview Party

An official M-22 highway road sign will help the Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library raise funds for the Library at the Wednesday, Aug. 10 Preview Party at the Glen Arbor Township Hall beginning at 7 p.m. The sign will be one of many other items included in the Live Auction that starts at 7:30 p.m. An original Celeste Crouch watercolor, as well as first edition books and author-signed books with Michigan significance, will also be auctioned.

Park seeks educators to bring Sleeping Bear Dunes into their classrooms

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is looking for educators who want to partner with the park. Educators will assist the National Lakeshore with developing educational programs that can be used both in the classroom and for field trips. New in town: Changed forest, Northwoods Home & Gift, realtors rotate

What’s new in town in 2016 — particularly if you haven’t visited Glen Arbor since last July — are the forests around the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. They are completely different. That’s because of the Aug. 2, 2015, megastorm, which packed “straight line” winds of 100 miles per hour, leveled thousands of hardwood trees across Alligator Hill, along the east side of Big Glen Lake, across Leelanau County and on Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City. The storm was the most dramatic thing to hit Glen Arbor in modern times, and it changed the experience of visiting our beloved National Lakeshore for generations to come.
