The Empire Hill Climb returns on Saturday, Sept. 15, and will include all sorts of race cars from homebuilt monsters, to vintage racers, rally cars and drift cars. Center Gallery exhibits the fiber constructions of three northern Michigan artists in its final 2018 exhibition. The work of Midge Obata, Holly Sorensen and Elizabeth Rodgers Hill opens with a reception on Friday, Sept. 14, from 6 p.m. to sundown, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Glen Arbor gallery located at 6023 S. Lake St.
Glen Arbor just can’t seem to catch a break from its own communication goof-ups. After a terrific uproar over the surprise new large digital sign foisted on an unsuspecting populace, followed by an Aug. 21 meeting attended by 70 taxpayers demanding better communication, the township called a special meeting to deal with the question of the sign. Problem is, the meeting was called on Aug. 29 for an Aug. 30, 4 p.m. meeting, giving townspeople less than a 30-hour notice.
John Hartig is one of seven artists selected to participate in the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s Artist in Residence program. He plans to work on his book-in-progress, Great Lakes Champions: Stories of People Who Have Championed Cleanup of the Great Lakes during his residency.
The Glen Lake Library in Empire has begun another season of Stories and More—the weekly program for preschool kids and their caregivers—on Thursdays at 11 a.m. Joanne “Yogi” Beare shares stories, music, rhymes, and hands-on crafts, creating a fun & engaging environment for young learners.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will institute an online reservation system on Jan.1, 2019, for camping at DH Day Campground, located on M-109 between Glen Arbor and Glen Haven. DH Day, a popular draw each summer, currently operates on a first-come, first-serve basis.
