Miserable weather conditions in the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 19, didn’t stop these hearty souls at Glen Arbor’s Winterfest.

Fifty-three people braved white-out snow conditions and below-zero temperatures to participate in a perch fishing contest with proceeds benefiting the Glen Lake School scholarship fund.

Tim Egeler (featured in the photo with the fish in his mouth) won first place for the largest catch; Mike Shimek finished second, and Sam Shimek finished third. The top three were all defending champions, reported Bob Smith, who owns the Sportman’s Shop.

About 700 people showed up for the chili cook-off at Boonedocks in the afternoon. Anderson’s Market won the contest, followed by the Crystal River Recreation District in second, with Boonedocks in third, the Fleis Education Scholarship Fund in fourth, and Glen Lake School in fifth place.

All told, the event raised more than $9,100 raised for Glen Lake scholarships.
