Michigan Land Use Institute publishes new Taste the Local Difference guide
The Michigan Land Use Institute today published its eighth annual Taste the Local Difference farm and food guide and launched its brand-new “Spend Ten Local Dollars” campaign, which urges Northwest Lower Michigan residents to pledge to buy local grown food products every week.

On Saturday, May 14, the Glen Lake Fire Department conducted training exercises across from The Homestead resort main entrance on M-22 north of Glen Arbor.

“You can take the girl out of Northern Michigan,” I explain to my climbing partner, Geoff, at our campsite in Yosemite National Park. “But you cannot take Northern Michigan out of the girl.” He watches as I dance childishly around the picnic table with a spatula in my hand, the smell of butter, fried onions, and morels rising from the camp stove.
Manitou Music Festival unveils 2011 schedule
The popular annual Manitou Music Festival — bringing great and eclectic music to Glen Arbor and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore — has unveiled its lineup for the coming summer. The festival will kick off with a July 2 Patriotic Music performance by the Northport Community Band at the Glen Arbor Athletic Club, and hold its popular Dune Climb Concert on July 10.
State Theatre to show shuttle launch
Area residents looking for one of the best NASA space shuttle launch viewing experiences outside of Florida’s Space Coast are invited to watch the Endeavour blast off at 8:56 a.m. Monday on the State Theatre’s huge screen, while listening to the rockets roar via a state-of-the-art sound system.
Local midwife, author holds book launch
Geradine Simkins’ new book is a comprehensive anthology of the life stories, struggles, and triumphs of 25 women who have dedicated their lives to social change and the practice of midwifery, and who have made significant contributions to shaping maternity health care in this country.
Empire, Glen Arbor Farmers Markets open next month
Suttons Bay’s farmers market will open Saturday in its new location, at North Park at the intersection of M-204 and M-22. The others lag a bit behind. Empire will open its farmers market on June 18 and remain open on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., until September 10. Glen Arbor will hold its farmers market on Tuesdays, from 9 to 1, from June 21 until August 30.
Louisiana Crawfish on the Crystal River
Crawfish season in Louisiana means crawfish season in Glen Arbor when you are married to a girl from Lafayette. Every year, come hell or highwater, she has several thousand pounds of mudbugs flown up for decadent massive consumption. Last night (May 7) was the night and I must say, a crawfish boil by Lafayette resident Greg Gilboux is our families favorite meal of the year. Park video promotes Heritage Trail
Pathways to Sleeping Bear and the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has released a dazzling new video that extolls the virtues of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, the 27-mile multi-use trail that will parallel M-22 and M-109 in and near the National Park. Construction will begin on the Heritage Trail late this summer.
