Onetime Sugar Loaf suitor Liko Smith continues to “Google poorly”

Following his ill-fated alleged attempt to acquire Sugar Loaf resort in Leelanau County a year ago, Eneliko Sean “Liko” Smith once again finds himself in legal hot water for his role with LV Air, ultra-luxury carrier that was supposed to fly between Las Vegas and New York, and received national media attention when it was announced in February.

Wings of Wonder to release Bald Eagle

Rebecca Lessard and Wings of Wonder will release a large Bald Eagle on Saturday, May 28 at the Empire Eagle’s Club property (the old Dunegrass Festival field) eight miles east of Empire, on M-72. The public is invited to attend this grand event, which begins at 11 a.m.

Eastward ho! Wiesens expand as Glen Arbor grows

“M-22 is all about the northern Michigan lifestyle,” an excited Matt Wiesen says while standing behind the wine counter at his and wife Katy’s new apparel store and tasting room in Glen Arbor. “It’s about a glass of wine on the boat, beaches, bonfires and a laid-back attitude.”

Chasing the Coho

On Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m. the program “The Coho Story: Gold Rush in Platte Bay,” will be presented at the Empire Township Hall. Learn about the most successful sport-fishing introduction in Great Lakes history and the Coho’s effects, including its triumphs and tragedies, on the Platte Bay area. Free popcorn will be served and donations are appreciated.

Art Association holds second artist in residence presentation

Ohio artist and art professor Taimur Cleary will be the Glen Arbor Art Association’s second artist-in-residence for the 2011 season. His presentation for the public will take place on Thursday, May 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Art Association’s building in Glen Arbor (opposite Cherry Republic — follow the sign to GAAA). The program is free and light refreshments will be served.

Something’s brewing at Sugarfoot Saloon

Long known for its Mexican-style fare — including fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, nachos and tostadas, and for its fabulously decadent desserts such as Earthquake Cake, Sombrero Sundae and Apple Cinnamon Delight — Sugarfoot Saloon formed a beer-making partnership with homebrewer Brian Bartos and began tapping his talents earlier this year.

National Lakeshore institutes new firewood policy

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (the local branch of the National Park Service) is announcing a new firewood program established to protect park forests from invasive insect and diseases commonly spread through the transport of firewood.

Glen Lake Association Receives National Award

The Glen Lake Association has received a 2011 National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) Award – one of four winners selected from organizations throughout the United States. The award honors associations for their extraordinary achievement in Fish Habitat Conservation.
