Foothills Café holds karma kitchen

The Foothills Café in Burdickville began a “Pay It Forward” Initiative this past summer, collecting over $2,200 in donations. This money has been designated to help stock the shelves of a couple local food banks and to promote a Karma Kitchen. Come to the Foothills on Saturday, Feb. 21, between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. for breakfast, free of charge. Visitors will have the option to “Pay It Forward” for 2015.

Leelanau Clean Water offers Water Smart Workshop

Leelanau Clean Water will hold a water smart workshop on Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. that will offer advice on how to increase the value of your business, property or land with low-impact development and landscaping. The event is targeted toward developers, builders, real estate agents, landscapers and homeowners. It is free to the public and businesses. Call 231-256-9812 to register and reserve a box lunch from the Thunderbird Cafe (costs $8).

Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail enjoys best snow conditions of season

Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes’ Kerry Kelly reports that the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail enjoys its best ski conditions of the 2014-15 season, following a grooming on Feb. 4. About three inches of new snow had fallen over the last couple of days and the groomer crew was out on the trail with the roller to build more base.

Squirrel wars and a mouse story, too

The squirrels arrived the first summer when the English walnut tree bore nuts. The tree was perhaps nine or 10 years old and until the summer of the squirrels there had been nothing to show of its true nature. The walnuts were formed as walnuts are, perfectly, with the insides of their halved shells, the nut meat, resembling intricate passageways of brain tissue.

Glen Arbor Winterfest turns 15

Join the Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce for the 15th annual Glen Arbor Winterfest on Saturday, Feb. 14. Festivities start at 7 a.m. with the Perch Fishing Contest, with prizes for first through fourth place catches. All participants will bring their biggest catches from Big and Little Glen Lake to the Sportsman Shop at 1 p.m., and winners will then be crowned. Entry fee for this event is $20, and all ages are welcome.

Art From Michigan’s wine country

Art, wine and small plate delectables will warm the night as the Glen Arbor Art Association, The Homestead, and Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail team up to offer Art From Michigan’s Wine Country on Friday, Feb. 6, from 6-8 pm. Now in its seventh year at The Homestead’s Mountain Flowers Lodge this fun winter event kicks off Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trails “Taste the Passion” weekend. The Friday night GAAA benefit features an art exhibit and sale of work by local artists, wine from Leelanau wineries, and a small plates menu designed by The Homestead’s chef.
