Local students call attention to gun violence in schools

This morning at 10 a.m., students from several Leelanau County high schools joined a nationwide school walkout on the one-month anniversary of the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Guns at the bottom of the bay: legacy of gun control in Grand Traverse

After my great-great-grandfather returned from the Civil War, laws regarding firearms were passed by many different units of government. Laws in Michigan prohibited the firing of guns in towns. Traverse City Police Chief Blacken had lots of firearms turned in to his office in 1926. Blacken dumped the guns in Grand Traverse Bay, ensuring the public’s safety from dangerous misfires.

Hungarian born Lou Batori dies at age 107

Lou Batori, Glen Arbor’s centenarian who was born in Budapest, survived the Russian advance during World War I, immigrated to the United States in 1929, made his career as a successful engineer, and downhill skied and motorcycled into his 100s, has died at age 107.

Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts art by Glen Lake sixth graders in March

March is national Youth Art Month. The Glen Arbor Arts Center (GAAC) celebrates the work of young creatives with an exhibition by Glen Lake Elementary School sixth graders taught by Leah Lawson, Glen Lake Elementary art teacher, and the GAAC’s After School Art kids led by instructor Sarah Cheek-Toomey. The show runs from March 1-23.

Op Ed: More funding needed for National Parks

While our national parks are as popular as ever, many are in need of repairs. Because of aging facilities and unreliable funding, roughly $46 million worth of repairs have accumulated in our state alone. Here in Michigan, investments in our parks would support 452 jobs in planning, road building, construction and carpentry, among other positions.

Leelanau County adds ninth recycling drop-off site

Leelanau County has added a ninth recycling drop-off site in 2018. Add Glen Lake School, located east of the Glen Lakes, to the roster that already includes: the Leelanau School, north of Glen Arbor; the Empire ball fields; the boat launch in Cedar; the Connie Binsfeld Government Center near Lake Leelanau; Northport, the Leelanau Sands Casino north of Suttons Bay; Suttons Bay School, and the old fire station in Elmwood Township near Traverse City.

M22 Challenge 2018 registration opens March 1

Online registration for the M22 Challenge opens Thursday, March 1, at 8 a.m. The annual event is capped at 900 athletes and in the past several years has reached capacity within 15 minutes. This year’s M22 Challenge will be held Saturday, June 9.

Special Sunday snowshoe hikes continue at Sleeping Bear Dunes

Special Sunday ranger-led snowshoe hikes are being added to the program calendar at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore this winter. In addition to their regularly scheduled Saturday hikes, snowshoe hikes will be offered on Sundays at 1 p.m., Feb. 4 and 11. Meet at the National Lakeshore’s Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire. League of Women Voters examines “broken” health care system

On Wednesday, February 7, at noon at the Leelanau County Government Center Lower Level Community Room the League of Women Voters Leelanau County will hold Part One of a forum entitled “Is Our Health Care System Broken?” featuring Kevin L. Seitz who will provide an overview of health care history and policy, leading up to where we are today.
