As Leelanau County embraces a snowy winter, the Empire Area Community Center (EACC) plans to revive a favorite winter tradition — the Empire Winterfest. Events will be hosted throughout the village on Saturday, Feb. 22. Winterfest was last held in Empire in 2018, but had been celebrated for decades before. The most well-known event — a polar plunge in South Bar Lake — will return this year, along with a number of other activities including public saunas, a neighbor coffee hour, potluck, and live music.

Six days in July, three emergencies on lakes near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, two cases of people not wearing life vests, and one death. These stories yield cautionary tales about enjoying but respecting these waters which are beautiful but can prove perilous, too. Read about the young men rescued in Lake Michigan floating in inner tubes one mile off Platte Point, a death on South Bar Lake in Empire, and a family that survived a boat fire on Big Glen Lake.

Just a reminder to mark your calendar for Saturday, Feb. 15 for Winterfest in Empire. Word has it that the fine folks from Grocers Daughter Chocolate Shop will once again serve their fantastic hot chocolate to all who venture down to beach.

Are you nuts if you jump through frozen ice into a frigid lake in February? Perhaps. But if you jump, take a victory lap, and then jump again, you’re definitely nuts! Check out this video of Empire resident Gerry Shiffman (with Jack Gyr and others) taking part in the annual Polar Dip as part of Empire’s Winterfest this past weekend.

Ninety-nine percent of sane humans wouldn’t consider jumping through a hole in the ice into freezing water. Yet every February, 50 or more people scream and laugh and jump into South Bar Lake in Empire.

It was the time of Winterfest, mid-February, in the village of Empire, when temperatures dipped well below the freezing mark. Snow had been shoveled to clear an area for ice-skating on South Bar Lake. Earlier in the day a fire truck had been there to spray a fine mist of water making a smooth surface.

Over in Empire, on Saturday, February 19, the crazy among us jumped into a hole carved in South Bar Lake. Word on the street is that those folks will thaw out by Memorial Day, in time for the tourists’ arrival. Here are photos from this year’s Empire Winterfest:

Both Empire’s and Glen Arbor’s annual Winterfests are coming up on Saturday, February 19. Take the Polar Plunge in Empire’s South Bar Lake, and come to Glen Arbor’s Perch Fishing contest from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. and the Chili Cookoff on the deck at Boone Docks from noon until 3 p.m.
