Sleeping Bear Dunes to conduct prescribed burn near Bass Lake

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore plans to conduct a prescribed fire this October near Bass Lake in Benzie County. The fire is a tool intended to restore habitat in forested ecosystems in the park. The 467-acre burn unit is within the National Lakeshore’s Platte River District in Benzie County, between Esch and Peterson Roads and west of M-22. For safety, the White Pine backcountry campground and some of the small roads and trails in the park will be closed to visitors during the active burning period.

DH Day Campground to adopt reservation system

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will institute an online reservation system on Jan.1, 2019, for camping at DH Day Campground, located on M-109 between Glen Arbor and Glen Haven. DH Day, a popular draw each summer, currently operates on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Public input meeting held for next stage of Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

The planning and design work for the next section of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail—between County Roads 669 and 651—has begun. There will be a public open house on Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Cleveland Township Hall, 955 W. Harbor Highway (M-22 between Bass Lake and Little Traverse Lake).

Sleeping Bear facility manager Lee Jameson retires after 41 years with National Park

Lee Jameson, facility manager at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, retired on Aug. 3 after 41 years with the National Park Service (NPS)—nearly 24 of them at the National Lakeshore. Jameson, a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources Forestry, worked one summer for the Washington State Department of Fisheries before landing a seasonal laborer position with Sleeping Bear Dunes in 1978 restoring the lighthouse complex.

Tours and new programs share history of Sleeping Bear settlers

Learn about the history of the area through bike, car, horse and wagon tours, and several programs offered by Historic Sleeping Bear, a partner group of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Bike Tours through the Port Oneida Rural Historic District will be offered on Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m., and Sunday afternoons from 2-4 p.m.
