In 2017, the National Lakeshore will be hosting a series of monthly astronomy programs that run from April through October. Park rangers and members of the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) will help you unravel some of the mysteries of the night sky as well as discover more about the daytime sky.

InstaMeet at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Upcoming Event

On Saturday, June 4, at 2 p.m., Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will host a free InstaMeet event to celebrate National Trails Day. An InstaMeet is an interactive, in-park event, allowing Instagram users (IGers) to meet up, take photos, and get to know each other. Once the IGers meet, they will accompany a park ranger on a nature hike.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore sets new visitation record in 2015

Talk of the Town

“Find Your Park” is the message being sent to the world by the National Park Service in anticipation of its 100th Anniversary in 2016. In 2015, a record 1,535,633 people “found their park” at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This just exceeded the 1,531,560 park visitors received in 2012 following ABC’s Good Morning America declaring the park the “Most Beautiful Place in America.”

The Sleeping Bear Dunes are alive in many ways — in folklore and legend, in plant and animal life, and, beginning in the late 1990s, with music. The first of many mid-July concerts staged at the Dune Climb took place on July 19, 1998. The idea was spawned by Crispin Campbell, cellist and Interlochen Arts Academy instructor since 1980.

Upcoming Event

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore joins parks, programs and partners across the country to encourage everyone to find their park and share their stories online at FindYourPark.com. Launched on Monday, March 30, by the National Park Service and the National Park Foundation, Find Your Park is a public awareness and education campaign celebrating the milestone centennial anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016 and setting the stage for its second century of service.

National Park Ranger Lachowski a local hero

Local Personality

U.S. Park Ranger Henry J. (Joe) Lachowski was presented with an award for valor by the Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewel in a ceremony on May 8 in Washington, D.C. The Valor Award honors employees of the Department of the Interior who risk their own lives while attempting to save the life of another.

National Park hosts antique apple and pear tree pruning workshop

Upcoming Event

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will host its annual pruning workshop on May 2 in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District. The workshop will be held at the Thoreson Farmstead, which is located on Thoreson Road, four miles north of Glen Arbor on M-22. Just follow the signs.
