Glen Arbor has a front-row seat at today’s titanic college football contest between Michigan and Ohio State at the Big House in Ann Arbor. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine have an annual friendly wager on “the game.” If the Buckeyes win, DeWine will receive “a gift package of famous Michigan-made cherry sweets and treats from Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor.”

On April 15, four sheriffs in northwest lower Michigan jointly issued a press release that questioned Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-at-home executive orders at the height of the COVID-19 crisis in Michigan. It happened to fall on the same day that demonstrators planned “Operating Gridlock”, their first of what became several protests at the State Capitol in Lansing against Whitmer’s orders. State Representative Jack O’Malley and his staff helped the sheriffs organize and write the release.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced this morning that she is extending the state’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order until May 15 in order to slow the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The order was set to expire at the end of April. However, she will ease restrictions on some activities that may make life, commerce and recreation easier on many northern Michiganders.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer will be the featured speaker at​ the Cherry Public House in Glen Arbor today, Thursday, Aug. 8, from noon until 1:30 p.m. She will discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding our Great Lakes and inland waterways. Cherry Republic will host this Michigan League of Conservation Voters event.

The public has the right to walk the Great Lakes shoreline, even along privately owned beaches. The United States Supreme Court reaffirmed that right on Tuesday. The court declined to hear an Indiana case filed by riparian land owners who live along the south shore of Lake Michigan.

State Representative Curt VanderWall (Republican) who represents Michigan’s 101st district says the bills being rushed through the legislature during this month’s lame duck session are “unfortunately part of politics”.
