Managing Shoreline: Natural landscaping for lake health, erosion control, and nutrient absorption- a workshop for property owners will be held on Wednesday, June 27, from 7-9 p.m. at the Leelanau Government and Community Center, 8527 E. Government Center Drive, Suttons Bay. Registration is $5 until June 20. After the 20 and at the door registration is $10. To register call (231) 256-9812. Topics will include healthy lake ecosystems, design of natural landscapes on shorelines, problems with high impact landscape methods, use of native plants and State rules and permits. This workshop is hosted by Leelanau Clean Water in cooperation with the Michigan Natural Shoreline Partnership. Leaders will be Buzz Long from the Leelanau Conservation District, Sarah U’Ren from the Watershed Center, and Rob Karner, field biologist from The Leelanau School.
She’s back again and holding on to her trophy. Keri Pawielski of St. Joseph, Mich., claimed first place in the women’s division of the M-22 Challenge for the fourth year in a row with a time of 1:23:43. Pawielski also took home the Queen of the Dune trophy for reaching the top of the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb first.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has approved a bid by On the Narrows Marina to expand on Big Glen Lake, despite local opposition and concern by the Glen Lake Association (GLA). MDEQ officer Robyn Schmidt confirmed to the Glen Arbor Sun that the draft permit she sent on May 16 to the McCahill family — which owns the marina — was countersigned and returned to the department on June 6. With the exception of moving their mooring buoys closer to shore, On the Narrows is now free to continue its expansion.
Imagine, 800 kayaks lying side by side, end to end in rows on the bank of Little Glen Lake in Glen Arbor. A few yards away, picture 800 bikes hanging in organized racks just off of M-22. Beyond the bikes and across M-22, envision 800 athletes ranging from 14 to 71 years old and hailing from 15 states and countries as far as Switzerland running up the Sleeping Bear Dunes Climb. What you are picturing is the fourth annual M-22 Challenge — which will take place this year on June 9 — and if you’re unfamiliar with where it’s taking place, just know that the athletes will tread on what was named the “Most Beautiful Place in America” by Good Morning America last year.
Runners and walkers will take the starting line in Glen Arbor on Saturday, June 16, for the inaugural Glen Arbor Solstice Half Marathon & 5k. With something to offer both hardcore endurance junkies and recreational athletes, the 13.1-mile race and 3.1-mile run/walk is expected to draw 400 participants.
The Glen Arbor Township Board held a special meeting today to respond to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regarding an application for a marina expansion on Big Glen Lake. On the Narrows Marina owner Conor McCahill seeks to add an additional 39 boat slips on a new dock, bringing the total to 46, as well as increase the moorings to 16.
TV 7&4 News featured this video of the Glen Lake Fire Department’s new fire boat yesterday. The entire $265,000 cost of the 28-foot fire boat was raised by community members in three months. The Fire Chief for the Department says the boat adds new capability for fighting fires on boats, wildfires near the water, as well as homes along the waterfront. Nearly 75% of the homes in the Glen Lake area are within 1000 feet of a body of water.
In mid-June, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore) staff identified an ash tree near Little Glen Lake infested with Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). This was the first time EAB had been confirmed within the National Lakeshore. National Lakeshore staff is working with partners and visitors to assess and mitigate the damage caused by these invasive pests.
Glen Arbor will hold its annual Labor Day Bridge Walk over the Glen Lake Narrows Bridge on Monday, Sept. 5. Participants will begin at noon on the north side of the bridge (in front of On The Narrows Marina) and proceed to the south side, where an inexpensive lunch and after-party will unfold at McCahills Crossing (formerly the Dairy Bar).
