“It is controversial,” admits Glen Arbor township supervisor Peter Van Nort, when asked about the new digital sign which was installed on the front lawn of the township hall in early August. Commonly referred to as “the Sign,” it’s actually comprised of two signs placed at opposing angles so it can be read from either direction. Few will miss it as they drive by.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, at noon at the Leelanau County Government Center’s lower level community room the League of Women Voters Leelanau County will host a forum entitled “Ballot Initiatives Explained”. The speakers will be Mike Arents of “Voters Not Politicians”; Erica Pressman of “Promote the Vote”; and Joan Hunault of the League of Women Voters Leelanau County who will speak on proposals for recreational marijuana, paid sick leave and increasing the minimum wage.

For 20 years, Michael Buhler was co-editor of the Sun. He designed these pages, adeptly arranged advertisements like Tetris blocks, and placed the stories and photos before you. Mike helped turn this rag into an attractive, full-color newsprint magazine with ads and images that pop, and stories that educate—a true asset of our vibrant community. But no longer. Mike died suddenly on the afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 16. He leaves a void in our hearts the size of the Manitou Passage.

The Glen Arbor Arts Center (GAAC) will hold an open call-for-entries foragriCULTURE: Barnyards andFarmscapes,a juried exhibition exploring the interconnections of food, farming and community through the lenses of art, architecture, film, history and theater. Entries for the show’s on-site jury may be delivered to the GAAC, (located at 6031 S. Lake St.), on Sept. 4-5, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Labor Day is nearly upon us, and summer is on the wane. Send summer 2018 off in style with an afternoon-long mini-music fest on the deck at Boonedocks in the heart of Glen Arbor. Boonapalooza returns on Sunday, Sept. 2, with a lineup that includes: Cabin Fever; Luunappi; N3Z; Straydoggies; Uncle Z and Unusual Suspects.

Traverse City painter Royce Deans exhibits a new body of working that offers a glimpse into his ongoing relationship with the Leelanau landscape Aug. 31-Sept. 13 at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. An artist’s reception to open the show is Friday, Aug. 31 from 6 p.m. until sundown in the gallery.

After a year’s hiatus for construction, the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s (GAAC) Artist-in-Residence program resumed in May 2018. This program of working residencies was established in the 1990s, and now attracts applicants from throughout the United States. Kathleen Kalinowski is one of seven artists selected in 2018. She will create drawings and paintings based on the themes of “nocturne” and “memory” in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore during her two-week residency.

Empire Area Community Center revives popular annual event. The Labor Day Bridge Walk over the Glen Lake Narrows bridge (M-22, south of Glen Arbor) will be held at noon on Monday, Sept. 3.

The planning and design work for the next section of the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail—between County Roads 669 and 651—has begun. There will be a public open house on Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Cleveland Township Hall, 955 W. Harbor Highway (M-22 between Bass Lake and Little Traverse Lake).
