Running Bear logs sixth race

On Tuesday, July 24, the Glen Arbor Women’s Club hosts the sixth annual Running Bear 5K Run/Walk and ½ Mile Kids’ Run. This event has become popular with locals and tourists alike participating. Last year, over 700 adults and children took part. The 5K event is open to everyone. You can run or walk, so young people as well as seniors can participate in the 5K. The younger children are not forgotten and can participate in a ½ Mile “Kids’ Run”. They run/walk the ½ mile and each child will receive a ribbon, an ice cream cone from Riverfront Pizza & Specialties and a miniature golf pass from The River. Bring the whole family and join the fun.

National Lakeshore offers invasive plant community workday

Are you looking for a way to get involved with your local national park this summer? Then lend a hand to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore). A Saturday workday will be offered as a way to involve visitors and community members in projects that also help them learn about different invasive plants impacting the park, local communities, and region. The National Lakeshore encourages all who are interested in assisting with park conservation to attend the workdays.

Mary Sharry to Exhibit at Glen Arbor Art Association

“Drawn to Water and other enchantments,” an exhibit of oil paintings by Empire artist Mary Sharry, will be on display at the Glen Arbor Art Association gallery at 6031 South Lake Street in Glen Arbor. A reception will be held on Friday, July 20, 6-9 p.m., with continued viewing on Saturday from 1-7 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The paintings depict the changing skies and colors of the waters in northern Michigan as well as everyday still life reflections. Glen Lake Women’s Club holds Art Fair

Don’t miss the Glen Lake Women’s Club’s 41st annual Glen Arbor Art Fair on Wednesday, July 18, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. All proceeds fund scholarships for Glen Lake High School students to attend Northwestern Michigan College and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. The fair will feature over 90 exhibitors, a snack bar featuring the “Walking Taco & Vegetarian Walking Taco” and other goodies. Raffle items are donated by various artisans.

Where do the chickadees go?

What’s the best-selling hardcover book in northern Michigan this year? Is it John Grisham’s Calico Kid or Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins? Surprise. It’s Chickadees At Night, a picture book for all ages by Empire author Bill O. Smith. According to Horizon Books in Traverse City, hundreds of these Chickadees have been flying off the shelves since the book’s release in late April. “People see it as an heirloom book,” says Jill Beauchamp of Horizon. “They are delighted by it and want to pass it along to their families.” Smith is quick to add that “it doesn’t hurt at all” that the illustrator is the gifted Traverse City watercolorist Charles R. Murphy.

Grand old flag tradition continues at Old Settlers on July Fourth

Among the many Fourth of July celebrations in Leelanau County, one of the longest running may be the Flag Raising Ceremony held at the century-plus Old Settlers Picnic Grounds in Burdickville. Sponsored by the Glen Lake Women’s Club, chairwoman Josephine Zara promises “an old-fashioned, country flag-raising,” beginning at 10 o’clock with services by local Cub Scout Pack #111. Retired United States Navy officer Peter Van Nort of Glen Arbor, who served with Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, will give the address, “We Are the People.” Soprano Susan Pocklington of Empire will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner,” accompanied by Maple City’s Patrick Niemisto on keyboard, Amy Peterson on flute, and David Watt on drum, both of Glen Arbor. A community sing-along, free flags for the children, cookies and lemonade will conclude the event.
