Meeting Taro Yamasaki for the first time, one would never guess that this soft-spoken, bespectacled man with a bit of gray in his beard wasn’t a typical Up North transplant with his slice of heaven amongst Leelanau’s trees, beaches and lake scenes. Then he begins to talk about his life’s work as a photojournalist, whose strong, often beautiful pictures paradoxically convey searing images that indict those who not only perpetrate violence upon their fellow beings, but also those of us who stand by, silent or indifferent or ignorant.
Two-year-old Billy Caraher rides the rig during the Glen Lake Fire Department’s annual Pancake Breakfast on July 1. His grandparents, Milwaukee natives Ron & Peggy Creten, have vacationed on Little Glen Lake for over 30 years.

Summer visitors miss the early flowers that bloom as the trees unfurl their leaves, so here is an illustration to give you a taste of that beauty. Leelanau County in May is a glorious experience. Wildflowers spring up on the hardwood forest floor, spreading a carpet of green and white over dead leaves of winter.

use bike trail that will run the length of the National Lakeshore, from the Leelanau-Benzie County Line to Good Harbor Bay. The first phase of the trail, expected to be complete by July, is a 4.3-mile section along M-109, from the Dune Climb to Glen Arbor. Check out Sun editor Mike Buhler’s photos of the trail here.

This weekend, as Glen Arborites woke up to a snowy landscape, at long last, the fire department watered down the town’s new ice rink next to the tennis courts, and families brought out their ice skates and hockey pucks. Photos by Ed and Molly Connolly.

Empire boasts a thriving public beach and two unique local festivals — Asparagus Festival in May and Anchor Day (this year on Saturday, July 16). But too often the cozy village fails to sustain crowds, and commerce. Business is booming at the colorful Miser’s Hoard and at hip Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak, but what should be done about the vacancies at the hardware store, or the old Taghon’s garage and schoolhouse on the corner of M-22 and M-72.
