Sleeping Bear gets $1.3 million in federal funds

U.S. Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin say that Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore has received a $1.3 million federal transportation grant to continue work on a 27-mile hike-and-bike trail.

Art of Sleeping Bear

Leelanau Press, a non-profit publisher whose mission is to publish work of regional writers and artists, in conjunction with the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan, invites artists to submit work to this juried fine art competition that will result in the publication of a color, large format, hardcover book and an exhibition at the Dennos Museum Center.

BATA offers more direct routes

The Bay Area Transit Authority, which serves Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties, is launching a huge makeover and backing away from its traditional, often slow, door-to-door dial-a-ride service in favor of many more direct, “fixed” routes that operate on tightly defined schedules.

Sleeping Bear Gallery owner Heather Caverly hopes to bring an artist colony to Empire. Caverly purchased the Empire Clipper Building across Front Street from the Village Office in January and, together with curator Becky Willis, she aims to turn it into a haven that features artists in residence, demonstrations and lectures and, of course, displays of unique art including metals, wood, glass, fibers, paintings, sculptures, ceramics and photography. Caverly and her husband Mark live in the newly renovated area behind the gallery, and Willis occupies the apartment upstairs.
