Leelanau’s early Polish settlements

During the late 1800s, millions of people fled the Polish districts of Germany, Russia and Austria to come to the United States. Mostly peasants who lacked basic subsistence, they were attracted by ample job opportunities for unskilled labor in the United States. Many settled in cities such as Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee to earn a living in meatpacking, construction, steelwork and heavy industry.

Leelanau Conservancy publishes book on protected lands

Working with iconic Leelanau photographer Ken Scott, the Leelanau Conservancy has published a book of photos and essays about the lands that the Leelanau Conservancy has protected over the last 27 years. The 56-page book, titled Why We Preserve features 52 stunning color photographs and seven essays by a cache of writers including renowned chef Mario Batali, CBS Sunday Morning News correspondent Martha Teichner and Traverse Magazine publisher Deborah Wyatt Fellows.

Urban, industrial architecture in Glen Arbor

Glen Arbor Artisans gallery opened on July 5 to feature Kristin Hurlin’s and Paul May’s art. The building, across M-22 from the Lakeshore Inn and kitty-corner from the tennis courts, is sleek, industrial and striking. Like the new M-22 store on the east end of town, the Artisans gallery features a board and batten exterior that leads the eye on a vertical path, not a horizontal one. “It makes you feel taller,” said Hurlin.

Water in the imagination

Paintings of Leelanau County’s land and water — as processed through the imagination of Grand Rapids artist Margo Burian — are on display next at Center Gallery, 6023 S. Lake St. in Glen Arbor. A public reception opens the show on July 24 at 6 p.m.

Yoga on the beach

Do you love yoga, fresh air, and the sound of gentle waves lapping at the beach. Come and experience the beach in a whole different way. The Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes is partnering with Yoga on the Beach to conduct two yoga sessions this summer. All donations for the classes benefit Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, who maintain the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, among other important functions.

Glen Lake Library Home Tour returns

The Friends of the Glen Lake Community Library host their biennial Home Tour on Thursday, July 23, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. As one of the Friends’ primary fundraisers, the event showcases five distinctive and diverse Glen Lake area homes.

Glen Arbor Sun editor Jacob Wheeler competed in, and filmed the 2015 M-22 Challenge, a unique Northern Michigan triathlon that includes a 2.5-mile run up the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb, an 18-mile bike ride around the Glen Lake and a 2.5-mile paddle on Little Glen Lake.
