Will Sleeping Bear Dunes set visitor record again in 2017?

Will Sleeping Bear Dunes break last year’s record for annual visitors to our National Park? 1,683,553 people visited Sleeping Bear in 2016, smashing the previous record of 1,535,633 set in 2015. The visitation tally in 2017 is more than 26,000 people ahead of last year’s pace, following a strong April and September, and a monster July.

Glen Arbor’s choice: the park or the pines?

Work began late this summer to implement the Glen Arbor Park improvement plan which was presented to the township earlier this year and approved by voters Aug. 8. The plan includes removal of many oak trees—some of which have already been taken out—and the two signature pine trees which frame either end of the tennis courts.

League of Women Voters shows Equal Means Equal

On Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. the documentary film Equal Means Equal will be shown at the Milliken Auditorium at Northwestern Michigan College. The film describes why now is the time for a constitutional Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

The Early Childhood Needs and Services Committee of the League of Women Voters Leelanau County (LWVLC) will host a forum entitled First Things First: Early Childhood in Leelanau—Supporting Community Resilience on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. in the Community Room in the lower level of the Government Center.

Sugar Loaf owner to meet Leelanau public

Jeff Katofsky, who purchased Sugar Loaf resort last November, will return to Leelanau County on Friday, Oct. 20, and meet with the public at 11 a.m. at the Leelanau County Government Center where he will field questions about the path forward for the long-shuttered ski resort.

A marathon along the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail

Fall racing has arrived. Let the excitement sink in. For many, this is the optimal running season. It is also common for runners to spend the summer training for a fall marathon. The relief that comes with the cooler temperatures can be felt in every inch of the athlete’s body. If there is one race on your fall calendar, make it the Sleeping Bear Marathon, Half Marathon, & 5k. This sixth annual event is held on Oct. 7th.
