Black Like Me: Growing up a person of color in Leelanau County

Northport native and Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District educator Marshall Collins, Jr., has a unique story to tell as an African-American in Leelanau County. Collins was the only black member of his graduating class in 1995, and despite struggling with being one of very few people of color, he returned to the County after college to be near his family and out of love for this region. Following the gruesome murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police on Memorial Day, Collins helped organize recent Black Lives Matter demonstrations in Traverse City, including an upbeat and peaceful rally at the Open Space on June 6 that drew a diverse crowd of approximately 2,000 mask-wearing and social distancing activists and allies.

“Wander and Gather” with artist Maia Hausler

As an environmentalist, Maia Hausler has honed a keen eye for nature’s botanical forms and vivid colors. As an artist, her fresh approach to watercolor and ink creates paintings that are both delicate and vibrant, with familiar subjects such as juniper sprigs, pitcher plants, and even the humble Queen Anne’s lace swaying and dancing across the page. The Glen Arbor Sun recently caught up with Hausler, who currently divides her time between Cedar and Copenhagen, Denmark.

“When we’re in a crisis, we cook.” How Martha’s adapted to takeout

When the order came in mid-March to shut the doors of non-essential businesses throughout Michigan, including restaurants, Martha Ryan, her son Matt and his wife Andi had an ace in their back pocket. Though taken by surprise, they were able to immediately reconfigure Martha’s Leelanau Table, the European-style bistro in Suttons Bay, from a sit-down dining establishment offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner into a dinner-only take-out.
