“Running Bear” runs again

From staff reports

The Glen Arbor Women’s Club will hold its fourth annual “5K Running Bear Run” on July 27. Last year more than 700 runners, young and old, took part. The Women’s Club sought an activity that the whole family could enjoy, from the youngest child to their grandparents.

The run day includes a half-mile Kid’s Run. Everyone who participates earns a ribbon, an ice cream cone from Riverfront Pizza & Deli, a coupon for miniature golf at The River at Crystal Bend, and new this year, a coupon to Campfire Pottery where they can paint a piece of pottery.

The 5K is for the entire family and can be run or walked, depending on age and athletic level. Metals and prizes are awarded for first and second place in nine age categories, beginning at 12 and under, and going to 80 and above. Prizes will also be awarded for Overall Best Male and Female. The “After Race Celebration” offers good food for the runners, and everyone registered in the 5K is eligible to receive one of over prizes, including wonderful items from local merchants. Highlights include a weekend at The Homestead resort, dinner at Blu, art, gift certificates and more. This is truly a great day.

The Running Bear Run has become a prized local tradition. The Women’s Club has learned that families converge in Glen Arbor from all over the country to make the Run an exciting annual event. One such family is the Berlachers. They’ve participated since the first year, and last year boasted 28 members of the family from across the United States, including Ohio, Illinois and Virginia. Their grandmother lives in Glen Arbor and they gather each year to support her and the local community.

Start your own family tradition and join the Running Bear Run on Tuesday, July 27, at 9 a.m. at Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor. Cost is $15 for the 5K Run/Walk ($12 if registered by July 26) and $5 for the Kids Run. All proceeds fund high school scholarships and community projects. More information is available by calling (231) 334-7363 or e-mailing runningbearrun@live.com. Please come out and enjoy a morning of fun in beautiful Glen Arbor.
