Smoke seeks to retake crown at Saturday’s M22 Challenge

From staff reports

The annual M22 Challenge takes place on Saturday, June 8, beginning at 8 a.m., on M-109 near the Sleeping Bear Dune Climb. The run-bike-paddle triathlon capitalizes on the majestic landscape and waterscape of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It is considered to be “the most beautiful race in America” because of its notoriously scenic site. The race itself has grown exponentially in its 11 years of existence, jumping from just 132 participants in 2009, to filling the 900-participant race cap in minutes when registration opens each March.

Athletes come from all across the U.S. to compete, spanning the range from amateurs to Olympians. This year’s spotlight is on USA Olympic paddler Jeff Smoke, last year’s M22 challenge winner Nicholas Amato, and three-time women’s winner Jamie Endicott.

Smoke, who is also a USA Olympic paddler, is back to try and reclaim his title this year as the M22 Challenge winner. Amato will also return to defend his title against tough competition.

The race is also unique in that it incorporates the famous “Dune Climb” as part of its 22-mile run, bike, paddle competition. While physically challenging, this segment of the race remains a fan favorite, as the incredible views from the top are simply unmatched.

At the heart of all M22 does is a desire to connect people with a common passion for the Great Lakes region – a place unlike any other on earth. M22 is a symbol that inspires people to get out and enjoy natural wonders and appreciate simplicity. We encourage individual, community, and environmental health and prosperity, and are proud to present an event as unique and as beautiful as the 2018 M22 Challenge.
