Old Settlers Flag Raising, 10 a.m. on Fourth of July

From staff reports

The Glen Lake Woman’s Club will once again sponsor the annual Fourth of July Flag Raising at Old Settlers Park on the southeastern shore of Big Glen Lake. The Woman’s Club has organized this patriotic community tradition every year since 1970. Hundreds of local residents always kick off their holiday here.

The Flag Raising starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, at the Old Settlers Picnic Grounds on Dunn’s Farm Road (CR-675). This year’s guest speaker will be Dave Taghon from the Empire Area Museum. The invocation will be given by Pastor Russell Logsdon of the Empire United Methodist Church. Cub Scout Troop 111 will lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance and perform the flag raising ceremony. The Summer Singers will perform and lead the community in singing the National Anthem, as well as other patriotic songs. Don’t worry if you don’t know all the words, as song sheets will be provided.

The festivities wrap up when the Glen Lake Woman’s Club serves cookies and lemonade to the crowd. It’s a patriotic celebration that all ages can enjoy. For more information, contact Carole Roach at 231-228-7037.
In case of rain, the Flag Raising event will be held in the Chapel building at Old Settlers Picnic Grounds.
