Glen Lake Woman’s Club holds July 4 flag raising
From staff reports
The Glen Lake Woman’s Club’s annual flag raising ceremony begins at 10 am on July 4 at the Old Settlers Picnic Grounds, located on the southeastern shore of Glen Lake near the corner of Dunn’s Farm Rd. (CR 675) and Burdickville Rd (CR 616). Please bring your own lawn chairs.
Celebrate the founding of our nation in a patriotic, joyous ceremony with community members of all ages. Captain Kevin M. Quarderer, U. S. Naval Attache to the United States Embassy in Australia, will be the featured speaker. For the past five years Quarderer was the Naval Attache to the US Embassy in London. A University of Michigan graduate with degrees in aerospace engineering, Quarderer is a life-long Michigan resident, career naval aviator, and current military diplomat.
His presentation is titled Independence Day Perspective-A Michigan Defense Diplomat’s View. The traditional raising of the flag will be followed by a singalong of well-loved and familiar patriotic songs. After the program the chapel will be open for tours.
The Glen Lake Woman’s Club was established in 1937 with a mission to foster social, civic and educational projects. In addition to the Art Fair, other Club projects include the improvement and beautification of the Chapel and grounds at Old Settlers Park, organization of the community Flag Raising Ceremony at Old Settlers Park, and a Christmas party for residents of the Maple Lake Valley Nursing Home.
Woman’s Club awards $15,000 in college scholarships
On May 25 during the Glen Lake School Awards Night, the Woman’s Club awarded five college scholarships to graduating Glen Lake seniors who will attend Northwestern Michigan College (NMC). Two additional students received second-year scholarships after successfully completing their first year of college courses at NMC.
Students have moved on to new and exciting opportunities after leaving Glen Lake Schools. Emily Ferguson Feaster, a former NMC scholarship winner, has been appointed the head of school at the Greenspire School in Traverse City and will be the principal of the middle school. She spent two years at NMC and then two years at Northern Michigan University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.
The $3,000 Janice F. Freeman Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Maggie Stewart. Mrs. Freeman was an active member of the Woman’s Club and chaired the Scholarship Committee for 14 years. The $3,000 Jeanine Wessinger Dean Honorary Scholarship, created as a special tribute to Jeanine Dean, was awarded to Kaci Kilsinski. Mrs. Dean is a former educator who served as the chairperson of the Woman’s Club Art Fair for 10 years.
Other graduating senior awards include $1,000 scholarships to Hazel Heilman, Riley Truog and Ethan Novak.
The two $3,000 second-year scholarships were awarded to Ava Plamondon and Hayden Shorter.
Since 1980, the Woman’s Club has awarded over $325,000 to 245 students to assist them on their path of higher learning. Funds for the college scholarships come from the profits from the annual Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair, the only fundraiser for the group. This year, the Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair will take place on July 19 at the Glen Lake Town Hall.
