On Saturday, Feb. 17, Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay will open its doors to the community and beyond with a complimentary property-wide showcase. Its 106 acres encompass everything from a vineyard and tasting room to a boutique inn, restaurant and hiking trails. The venues will be showcased as much as the food and beverages. Members of the Black Star team will be on hand to guide guests through various offerings at the sprawling property.

The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m., beginning at the inn with sparkling wine and some favorites from Black Star Farm’s catering menu. Then it’s on to the centennial Pegasus Barn, where patrons can partake in a pairing of mulled wine and a house-made red wine chocolate truffle. Both the inn and the barn will be set up as potential meeting/event sites, with various table settings and décor options.

Next up is the Bistro Polaris for a pour of house wine with samples of wood-fired pizzas. It’s also an opportunity to learn about Black Star Farms’ wine & workshop series and its cooking classes. They are both open to the public, though they can also be booked as private events.

The afternoon concludes at the Black Star Farms tasting room, where attendees can enjoy a sample of one of its signature cocktails. A curated wine and small bite flight will also be available for $15.

Black Star Farms has won numerous awards since opening in 1998. They include being named “Best Wine Country Hotel” by USA Today Reader’s Choice, “Michigan’s Best Winery” by Hour Detroit from 2012 to 2019, and “Best Luxury Wine & Culinary Destination – Midwest” by LUX Magazine’s Travel and Tourism Awards 2021. It was the state’s first and only winery awarded “Best in Show” at the Canberra International Riesling Competition, and its Arcturos Dry Riesling 2021 was one of six Riesling wines from the Traverse Wine Coast cited as “Highly Recommended” by Decanter magazine.

“We want our locals to feel the warmth of community during the winter season,” says Sarah Kosteva, marketing manager at the property. “We’re offering complimentary menu and wine samples to give locals a chance to try things they may not have experienced before.

“I believe this event captures the essence of what makes our local Leelanau community special — coming together, celebrating the Northern Michigan lifestyle, and creating memories. It’s our way of saying thank you for being a part of our Black Star Farms family.”
