Black bear visits Glen Arbor

From staff reports

The Sleeping Bear has awoken.

Numerous Glen Arbor residents reported that a black bear visited their homes in late April. Barb Smith, who lives on Fischer Point near Big Glen Lake, took the following photos of the intruder, on both April 20 and April 30.

Georgia Gietzen reported that a black bear demolished her bird feeder pole with heavy iron brackets. “We couldn’t believe what the brackets looked like,” said Gietzen. “Certainly not a squirrel, and hard to believe a raccoon could have just pulled them down like they were.”

The bear (presumably the same one) was spotted early on the morning of May 1 on Lake Street. Doug Manning, who tracked the bear with his trail camera on the Gass trail near Glen Lake, confirmed its arrival in town.

Stay tuned for more about the sleeping bear’s arrival in the season-opening, May 21 edition of the Glen Arbor Sun.
