Manitou Island Transit resumes ferry service May 28

Manitou Island Transit’s passenger ferry “Mishe-Mokwa” will resume service to the Manitou Islands on Friday, May 28, after record-high Lake Michigan water levels, flooded docks and the COVID-19 pandemic forced the family-owned business to take a year-long hiatus in 2020. “It’s a relief. We weren’t going to make it another year,” co-owner Megan Grosvenor Muñoz told the Sun. “But when you drop something for a year, getting everything up and running is difficult.”

Chili Cook-off contest canceled, chili still sold at area restaurants; proceeds fund Glen Lake School scholarships

The Glen Lake Chamber of Commerce reports that this year’s Glen Lake Winter Fest has been revamped in light of COVID-19 social distancing precautions. The popular chili cook-off fundraiser will take place at locations in both Glen Arbor and Empire during President’s Day and Valentine’s Day weekend, February 13-14.

Christmas tree shortage, big box buyup cause scarcity in Leelanau

UPDATE (Nov. 18): Northwoods Hardware owners Jeff and Georgia Gietzen report that—thanks to front-page coverage in the Glen Arbor Sun about the lack of Fraser Fir trees for sale this year—three different tree suppliers contacted Northwoods Hardware, “and we’re now going to be in the tree business once again this holiday season!” wrote Georgia.
