Painting scenes of Leelanau: profile on Linda Alice Dewey

Each week through 2022, the Glen Arbor Sun will feature a Q&A with a Leelanau County resident who shapes life in the peninsula through their business, their art, their service, their kindness, or otherwise. We lead off the series with Linda Alice Dewey, a painter, author, occasional contributor to this newspaper, and host of the “Glen Arbor” community group on Facebook. In this interview, we talked with Linda about her paintings, which are often inspired by photographs of Leelanau County scenes.

What unifies us in politically divided times. Life and democracy in Leelanau

“What do you like about living in Leelanau County?” “What are your favorite autumn traditions?” “What are you eating these days?” “What does living in a democracy mean to you?” These are the questions we’re asking a few County residents as we explore what unifies us in these politically divided times with the Nov. 5 presidential election looming just days away. The message in these short video profiles is to show that—while your neighbor or your family member might display a different political yard sign and vote differently than you—we have more in common than we think, and we should remember and embrace what binds us together despite the caustic atmosphere around the election campaigns. Our first video features musician Luke Woltanski, who lives in Maple City.

Glen Arbor Wines hosts Mother’s Day art show, cheese demo, live music

Celebrate Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday, May 11, at Glen Arbor Wines from 4-7 p.m.  The business on Lake Street, just north of M-22, will feature a mini-art show, “Reflections of Sleeping Bear,” where guests can meet the talented exhibitors: artists Linda Alice Dewey, Morgan Fisher, Maryann Barnes and photographer Eric Raymond. Local photographer Gracie Dickinson will also show her vintage maps and photos of Leelanau County. In addition, Leelanau Cheese will demonstrate the delicious art of melting locally made raclette from 4-6 p.m., and musician John Piatek performs from 5-7 p.m.

Glen Arbor cemetery holds memorial ceremony, library presentation

The fourth annual Glen Arbor Cemetery Memorial Ceremony, commemorating the nearly lost site, will be held at 10 am on Friday, May 26. John Sawyer of Traverse City will deliver a eulogy detailing the life of one of the four Civil War veterans buried at the cemetery, James Lawrence Green. And on Wednesday, May 24, the Glen Lake Community Library in Empire will host a presentation about the history of the Glen Arbor Township Cemetery, which served the Glen Lake area from 1880-1927, and the renewed effort to reclaim this long-neglected resting place. Last week, ground penetrating radar revealed an additional mass grave of more than 50 bodies buried at the cemetery sometime between the late 1800s and early 1900s. This cemetery in the woods off Forest Haven Road, west of downtown Glen Arbor, was nearly lost to history before Glen Arbor Township regained control over it from the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore after the big storm of August 2015. Glen Lake Library opens community exhibit with “On the Precipice”

The light and inviting new Glen Lake Community Library, which opened in Empire in September 2020 during the height of the COVID pandemic, will host its first public exhibit and opening reception on Tuesday, June 29, from 6-7 p.m. for a show called “On the Precipice” which pairs 10 pastel paintings and 10 poems written in response to those paintings. The painter is Glen Arbor resident Linda Alice Dewey, and the poet is Empire resident Anne-Marie Oomen.

Glen Arbor daughter strives to bring home airmen MIA from World War II Kassel Mission

Glen Arbor resident Linda Dewey recounts how her father, Air Force captain Bill Dewey survived the Kassel Mission over Germany in this Memorial Day story honoring the Greatest Generation, who won the Second World War. Linda is working with the Kassel Mission Memorial Association to bring home the remains of American airmen who went missing in action in on Sept. 27, 1944.

Memorial Day ceremony at Glen Arbor Township Cemetery honors Civil War veteran

For the first time in nearly a century there will be a memorial ceremony under the auspices of the Township of Glen Arbor at the old cemetery on Forest Haven Road. In 1977, half a century after the last person was buried there, the cemetery was mistakenly transferred to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in a land title mix-up. The error was discovered 18 months ago and was put to rights over the following year. The service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 28. The public is welcome.

Leelanau County Poor Farm Barn named a Michigan Barn of the Year

The Michigan Barn Preservation Network (MBPN) has designated the Leelanau County Poor Farm Barn as a Barn of the Year. A dedication event will be held outside the barn on Thursday, May 20, at 4 pm. A plaque and sign will be presented to Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society president Steve Stier. The public is invited to attend.

From cherries to lavender: a Leelanau grower adapts to change
