Leelanau League of Women Voters examines public education, past and present

The League of Women Voters Leelanau County will host a presentation on Public Education: Past and Present on Wednesday Oct. 1 at noon in the lower level public meeting room of the Leelanau County Government Center. The October meeting will be the first session of a two-part discussion on public education. Henrietta Barnes, professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Teacher Education at Michigan State University will moderate the discussion and reflect on how historic purposes, goals and educational reforms have changed.
The presenters will be Michael Hill and Jason Jeffrey. Hill, Superintendent of the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, will report on current federal and state reform initiatives enacted by the Michigan legislature, including state mandates, the core curriculum, and teacher evaluations. Jeffrey, Assistant Superintendent of TBAISD, will examine data on student achievement, kindergarten readiness, graduation rates and other indicators of learning. The follow-up to this presentation will be held at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 5 when panelists will address the issue of income inequality and poverty as it relates to schooling and achievement gaps.
