Present day Maple City gets its name from the heavy stand of Maple Trees that densely covered the area up until the late 1800s. Maple City was originally called Peg Town and founded by J.T. Sturtevant and his son in 1866. Sturtevant started a wooden peg factory, which supplied the pegs to various shoe manufacturers. The business flourished until 1880 when it caught fire and burned down. Peg Town was renamed Maple when the first U.S. Post office was established in the town and later renamed to Maple City. In the heart of downtown, Pegtown Station boasts homemade pizza, subs and salads — its salads and pizza are considered among the best in northern Michigan, according to the Northern Express’ “Readers Choice Awards”.

Read this excerpt from Josephine Arrowood’s story “Find Leelanau’s heart in Maple City”, which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in August 2006:

Pegtown Station restaurant — named after the historic role the town once played in manufacturing lumber products — embraces the old-time atmosphere of the former “Cash Variety Store” with red plaster walls, wainscoting, and well-patinated hardwood flooring. Feast on a farmer’s omelet, complete with sourdough or whole wheat toast made from scratch, while enjoying the Foothills blend of the Leelanau Coffee Roasting Company, and watch the train whiz by overhead on tracks that circle the dining room’s perimeter. Pegtown’s lunch and dinner menus are worth a return visit, with a wide variety of hot and cold sub sandwiches on homemade buns, dinner baskets, and specialty pizzas, including such exotica as the “Philly Cheese Steak” pizza with roast beef, mozzarella, onions, and peppers, or “The Greek,” laden with garlic-infused oil, onions, feta, fresh spinach leaves, tomatoes, black olives, mozzarella and artichoke hearts on handmade dough. Pegtown Station is open year-round with extensive hours, and closed on Mondays.

Award-winning Chef John Piombo prepares a menu featuring fresh, local ingredients from scratch at Nonna’s Italian Ristorante. The food here is billed as simple, unpretentious and good. Piombo recently accepted a challenge from MyNorth.com (the website of Traverse Magazine, to compete in a local foods showdown and prepared Goat Cheese and Kale Spelt Ravioli with Roasted Rabbit Aspargus and Cream. In accordance with the rules of the showdown, 90 percent of the ingredients for this dish were from Northern Michigan and another 5 percent from the state, making it a 95 percent made-in-Michigan dish.

Please read this excerpt from Norm Wheeler’s story, “The Culinary Yes! Of Nonna’s” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in July 2011:

It’s a quiet evening in The Village at The Homestead. Months of heavy equipment excavations and re-shaping around the parking area at the base of the ski hill are nearly complete, and four days of constant rain have settled the dust and painted the hillsides the lush green of a cool, wet June. But inside the elegant eatery called Nonna’s, it’s warm and welcoming. Mimi and I are meeting dear friends Bronwyn and Joe to share an intimate evening and to celebrate the men’s June birthdays by indulging in the offerings of Chef John M. Piombo. With wife Sarah and daughters Alessia and Giovanna, Chef Piombo is back in the cool north after a brief hiatus in Miami. By his smile you can see he’s pleased with the return. And soon so are we.

“We are not just selling cherries anymore; we are trying to make a better world,” says Cherry Republic President Bob Sutherland, who has taken a cue from one of the country’s prominent environmental philanthropists and made an effort to “green up” his popular Glen Arbor business that sells all things cherry — from ice cream, to salsa, to clothing. True to form, Cherry Republic installed dual flush toilets and a solar-thermal system this past May.”

Blend an artist’s vision, a chef’s craft, and an entrepreneur’s spirit. Season with family collaboration and community support. The result is Cedar’s long-awaited family restaurant which, when paired with a gold medal-winning winery, lingers deliciously on the palate. The Cedar Rustic Inn and Longview Winery tasting room, on the site of the former Eddie G’s restaurant in Cedar, opened in 2006 after years of planning by artist and restaurant owner Linda Ackley-Eaker, her son Aaron Ackley, and her husband Alan Eaker — the owner of Longview Winery.

Read this excerpt from Pat Stinson’s story “Cedar’s newest restaurant offers fresh, local dining”, which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in July 2006:
“You’ve seen omelets that look like the side of a mountain?” Aaron asks. “They’re cooked eggs wrapped around raw, cold ingredients. That’s not an omelet.” If you sauté your veggies first, like the French do, then add the eggs, Aarons says the eggs will soufflé and develop the flavor of the veggies and meats. “I don’t cook by recipe but by method. Everything cooked by sound method turns out right.” … The “less more often” principle Aaron learned while at the Culinary Institute of America is applied to homemade menu items, such as dressings, coleslaw and soups. Cooking smaller amounts of food as needed produces less waste, Aaron explains, and makes it easier to control the cost and quality of the food. To ensure freshness and to adhere to the family’s philosophy of buying local products, Aaron shops at the Cedar City Market for organic foods, Pleva’s for fresh meats and Buntings Market for smoked menu items, like sausages.

Please read this excerpt from Nadine Gilmer’s story, “Foothills Café: old traditions, new owners”, which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in September 2010.

Last July a trio from downstate and Ohio — Paul Staber, Shari Bernstein, and Shirley Cheney — acquired The Foothills from previous owner Don Sielaff after they happened upon the café in whimsical fashion. The three were on vacation in Leelanau County and stopped to enjoy a hearty breakfast. Cheney ordered the pancakes, which, as fate would have it, tasted exactly like the pancakes her father used to make her. Sitting in the baby blue booths, among the Vanagon statues, Manitou Music Festival posters, and retro-red chairs, Cheney looked around, and said, “This feels like home.”
Needless to say, the three were charmed enough to stay. They were already thinking about buying a bed and breakfast, but they had planned to wait until this year so that Bernstein’s son could graduate high school. Instead, when Cheney’s husband passed away, and they saw the Foothills, everything fell into place. She already felt a special connection to the area — not to mention the pancakes. “Don made them like my dad,” she says, then points her thumb at Staber in the kitchen. “Now he does them just like my dad.”

Northern Michigan burger aficionados weren’t surprised at all when Joe’s Friendly Tavern in Empire (Frank Lerchen is actually the owner, but old names die hard in these parts) won TV 7&4′s award for the best burger around. Lerchen told the local television station: “The burgers are the best, absolutely — no questions asked. … I have people who come from all over the country, even out of this country for years and years (and years and years … he goes on) and they always come back and say that we have the best dang’ burgers.”

Long known for its Mexican-style fare — including fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, nachos and tostadas, and for its fabulously decadent desserts such as Earthquake Cake, Sombrero Sundae and Apple Cinnamon Delight — Sugarfoot Saloon formed a beer-making partnership with homebrewer Brian Bartos and began tapping his talents earlier this year.

Please read this excerpt from Pat Stinson’s story, “Something’s brewing at Sugarfoot Saloon” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in May 2011:
You might want to try the flavorful hangar steak, added to the saloon’s American-style dinner selections, which have grown in popularity. The menu includes stand-outs like broasted chicken, beer-battered shrimp, perch, whitefish almondine, a chicken pot pie praised by Leelanau.com and prime rib. Locally grown vegetables, like the season’s asparagus, are served as they’re available with the entrees.
To some who see the food and drink changes as a signal that the laid-back atmosphere of the old ’Foots is changing, fear not. Decorative chili peppers and festive strings of lights still adorn the bar. The game room still amuses the young and young at heart.
