Art’s Tavern

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Art’s Tavern has been located at the corner of Lake Street and M22 is some form or another since before prohibition. Originally called the Blue Goose Saloon when run by Frank Sheridan, it was renamed by Frank’s son Art when he took over after his father’s accidental electrocution in 1934. Art saw the tavern through many good times until 1950 when an electrical fire burned the tavern down. In July 2000, Tim bought the operation and wisely retained the name Art’s. Art’s is open seven days a week, 360 days a year, serving up good times and great food. Art’s proudly remains a “quaint piece of schlock” in an increasingly generic world.

Please read this excerpt from Jacob Wheeler’s story, “Art’s bans smoking” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun on Nov. 8, 2009:

Patrons will no longer walk out of Art’s Tavern — one of Leelanau County’s most popular drinking holes — smelling like an ashtray. Effective Nov. 1, owner Tim Barr (who we like to call Glen Arbor’s unofficial mayor) banned the use of cancer sticks on his premises. “These days, it seems like 80 percent of people (or more) don’t smoke, so they’re in the majority,” said Barr, who made the populist decision before the state or the county get around to enacting a ban on smoking in local bars or restaurants. Barr added that the move has drawn nothing but praise — especially from his employees. And customers have already commented that the establishment smells nicer since Nov. 1. “I’ve been breathing smoke for 35 years,” says Barr. “It’s time to think about my health, too.”

Please read this excerpt from Norm Wheeler’s story, “Eating and art converge at Blu” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun on Nov. 18, 2010:

“Proprietors Randy and Mari Chamberlain like to emphasize local sources of everything for the quality that brings to the experience of dining, and our waitress Toni establishes the theme right away. She recommends a Woodland Red from Chateau Fontaine on French Road here in The County, and it is a hearty, full wine perfect for the variety of flavors we are about to sample. With the first pour she brings a nibble snack of Halpin Farm goat cheese with Sweeter Song Farm beets on a tiny square of toast, and we gaze out at the spectacular panorama that surrounds us at Blu. We reminisce about our wedding day all those many years ago in Denmark, the little white church on the hill beside the great oak tree, the all-day feast full of toasts and laughter, the evening banquet of venison at the local Inn, and we notice how the music in the cozy room synchronizes with our memories as Chet Baker croons “There Will Never Be Another You.” (You know how sometimes the music matches up perfectly with the flow of conversation and the unfolding of a meal in a trippy synchronicity, as if you’re in a movie in which even the sound track is scripted to amplify the arc of the evening? This is one of those nights!)”

Glen Arbor: Good Harbor Grill

Friday, January 1st, 2010

The concept of the Good Harbor Grill was born on Brendan and Ann’s sailboat in the Caribbean, as the northern Michigan couple struggled with two questions: What would be the ideal restaurant to find in the next harbor? And what could they do if they moved, full-time, to their cottage in northern Michigan? Over nearly two decades, the seasonal (May to October) Glen Arbor restaurant has evolved into a village favorite that serves wonderful salads, homemade soups, awesome bread, real roasted turkey sandwiches, creative breakfasts, hand-cut beef, a great seafood selection and flavorful vegetarian dishes. Brendan and Ann store the boat in Florida during the summer and still manage to sail the Caribbean most winters.

The Good Harbor Grill is known for their Crab Cakes Benedict or Crab & Avacado Omelet for breakfast, for soups like the Seafood Mediterranean with lots of garlic and kalamata olives for lunch, and for fresh and unique salads with an emphasis on local, organic food. Some featured entrees are Mahi-Mahi, or Lamb with a mint pesto topping. Cos is now making in-house pies, including Strawberry Rhubarb and Chocolate Bourbon Pecan.

Please read this excerpt from Norm Wheeler’s story “Riverfront Pizza and Deli expands into their 18th year” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in August 2000:

It’s hard to pin down Tim or Sue Nichols for an interview at Riverfront Pizza & Deli. This time of the year they’re almost too busy to talk. And showing up at the end of lunch hour is bad timing. But after 18 years of serving the Glen Lake area, they are one of the town’s oldest businesses still operated by the original owners, so they are patient with me, and they are always gracious. Sue takes time to tell me about the new deli operation that they started in May. “We have sandwiches, rollups, salads, cheesecakes, and bar cookies ready to go out the door,” Sue says. “Everybody seems to be in such a big hurry when they’re on vacation!”

Read this excerpt from Kate McCarty’s story “Crooning karaoke at the Western Avenue Grill” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun July 2009:

It’s a sleepy Friday night in Glen Arbor. Tourists have left the beaches and they’ve finished their dinners. The sun has set behind the Manitou Islands. Despite the quiet that’s fallen over the town, something is brewing at the Western Avenue Grill. Bar manager Bill Skolnik stands behind a karaoke machine, music blaring. Though the bar is nearly empty, he’s gearing up for the anticipated crowd that usually arrives around 11 p.m.

Funistrada

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Trattoria Funistrada was started in 2000 by owners Tom & Holly Reay, after they located the perfect property for an Italian Restaurant in Burdickville. The building Funistrada resides in has an almost 100 year history of food service, including the best remembered Glen Lake Inn — operating for over 20 years as a German restaurant. Some people might even remember “Alfono’s”, and one neighbor recalls an earlier time in the 30’s …” I used to listen to the men at the bar singing ‘You are My Sunshine’, when I was young, sleeping on the sleeping porch of my grandparent’s cottage.”

Please read this excerpt from Norm Wheeler’s story, “Funistrada means excellent Italian food ‘off the beaten path’” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in 2000:

“Some enchanting scent was riding the air current up to Echo Valley from Burdickville. It wasn’t the burnt smell of roasting coffee I sometimes nose when the north wind is strong over Glen Arbor. No, this was making me hungry. It was oregano! Someone had a pot full of bubbling tomato sauce simmering downwind, and I was determined to find the source of that heavenly smell. There was garlic in it too, and the promise of Chianti served in a wicker bottle by a woman like the one in “Il Postino.” So I quick-peddled down the green tunnel of Echo Valley Road to find a new Italian country restaurant just opening near Miller’s Resort. Tom and Holly Reay have hatched their dream, their own eatery at the former Glen Lake Inn in Burdickville.”

La Becasse

Friday, January 1st, 2010

La Becasse serves authentic French country fare in Burdickville in Leelanau County. The restaurant is a mere 30-minute scenic drive west of Traverse City, situated between Glen Arbor, Empire and Maple City. La Becasse is near the south side of Big Glen Lake. New to the restaurant’s menu this winter is a “bistro” section. In addition to the traditional menu, the bistro selections are more typically what you would find on the menu of a French bistro or brasserie. These more casual items are intended to satisfy a lighter appetite while staying true to La Becasse’s French concept.

Please read this excerpt from Norm Wheeler’s story, “The perfection of La Becasse” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in July 2010:

“The selection of appetizers is so tantalizing that choosing is tough. There are duck pate, seared scallops, escargot, artisanal cheeses, or French gravlax with aquavit (my usual favorite), but the specials tonight are even more alluring. Onion pie? Crab cake? No, we guiltily go for the frog legs (our pond is full of big healthy croakers) and the pork rillettes. With the cracker-and-bread basket come the two lovely plates, and we are not disappointed. The pork rillettes arrive adorned with tiny pickles, blueberries and mission figs next to a hillock of Dijon mustard. The naughty, fatty pork is warm and earthy — you smell the woods where the truffle hunting pigs of France root and nose through rotting leaves, you hear their snorts and see their steaming, foetid breath. These flavors transport you to another continent.

Fresh from Lake Okeechobee, Mimi’s sautéed frog legs are even more astonishing. Served on a bed of spring lettuce with onion and tomato, the curry-chili-tandori herb seasoning sensationally compliments the tender, juicy delicacy of the butter-fried frog legs. The spices contrast in a perfectly balanced way, and you realize that this is exactly what Robespierre ate with his fingers secretly in his quarters late at night, the way Americans today wolf hot wings in sports bars! These are perfect appetizers.”

Glen Lake Manor

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Take in the view of Little Glen Lake while enjoying dinner at the Manor on Glen Lake. The fine dining restaurant, located on M-22 just west of the Narrows, was originally a summer hotel that was restored to an Old World look. Owner Nancy Wright has 15 years in the industry. She was previously the owner and operator of LeBear Restaurant in Glen Arbor for 12 years.

Please read this excerpt from Jacob Wheeler’s story “Dining on the deck at the Glen Lake Manor” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in August 2010

Ah, what better way to celebrate an August early evening than with summer fresh ingredients — both on my plate and in my glass — and a view of the shifting light over Little Glen. At the Manor on Glen Lake, you can begin your dining affair with a fresh bruschetta appetizer (tomato basil, garlic, onion and balsamic vinegar on bread) and a minty mojito, and have your view too. It’s honestly difficult to decide which of the three are more deserving of your full attention.

That’s the biggest dilemma facing patrons of Scott Lee Grant’s cuisine. So yes, things could be much worse.

Grant, a graduate of the Culinary Arts Institute of Seattle and native of Clare, Mich., joined the Manor in early July after seeing an advertisement for an executive chef position posted by owner Nancy Wright. Grant and his fiance Tammy were tired of the rat-race in Port Huron, Mich. (they occasionally heard gun shots): he visited the Manor in late June, Wright hired him on the spot, and he stuck around to work Sunday brunch the next day. The couple’s move out of the city and up north has been a breath of fresh air — other than when their moving truck broke down in Flint for an entire day.

Melba Ann’s Restaurant and Motel

Friday, January 1st, 2010

While many restaurants feed you, few are those that add to the experience of your vacation like Melba Ann’s can. Located just south of the Narrows Bridge, which divides Big and Little Glen Lakes, Melba Ann’s occupies a building that has seen different eateries come and go since 1952. Since opening last June, owners Stu Dana and Terry Ormsbee have enjoyed an enthusiastic and warm response from the local community.

Please read this excerpt from Brooks Vanderbush’s story, “Melba Ann’s delivers at the Narrows” which ran in the Glen Arbor Sun in August 2010:

Boasting a menu that seems a mile long, Melba Ann’s offers something for everyone.

“We serve breakfast and lunch with a small dinner menu,” says Ormsbee. “We do not have a deep fryer yet; so we don’t do fried food. Breakfast is served anytime. I try to do everything from scratch. The only thing that I can say that I never do from scratch are my donuts. Everything else is baked here; pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls.”

Breakfast is the restaurant’s bestseller, in particular “Terry’s Omelet,” Ormsbee attests.

“Terry’s Omelet” features onions, sausage, potatoes and cheddar cheese topped with sausage gravy and cheddar cheese. Melba Ann’s also offers a breakfast pizza on the weekends — a 10-inch pizza with eggs, cheese, sausage and/or bacon.
