Living in the area, my family had a wonderful opportunity to get to know our animal friends.

We would see the young deer frolicking on the beach in early spring; our "pet" raccoon, who brought her family onto the porch for us to see; beavers who walked across the porch and were most surprised to see us; and a friendly chipmunk, who would come to the window to "talk" to the cat. In addition to these friends, we remember coyotes, foxes, wolves and, of course, many birds, etc.

However, my reason for replying involves your mention of a porcupine, a creature who undoubtedly did not like us very much! One summer, my father discovered that a porcupine had taken up residence in the top of our garage. Hoping that he would move but not wanting to hurt him, my father sprayed him with a hose. The poor porcupine was most offended and left to never return. We've felt guilty ever since!

Michigan offers a unique opportunity to watch, and get to know, the different creatures. I miss them all but, particularly, "Bambi."
